Kentucky's Native Flora & Fauna of Greatest Conservation Need
A listing of our native Species of Greatest Conservation Need for Plants, Amphibians, Reptiles, Mammals, and Fishes. Birds, Crustaceans, Mussels, and Insects are each separated into their own projects. Plants obtained from KNPS and SWAP
University of Kentucky's Biodiversity
An examination of the biodiversity across the University of Kentucky campus and immediate surrounding area - this project is a portal for all observations taken within the geofenced bounds of UK, which I have uploaded as a custom 'Place' here in iNaturalist.
UUCL's Biodiversity
Monitoring the species found at the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Lexington.
Kentucky State Arboretum Index
All species found within Arboretum grounds
Kentucky's Bee Survey
Helping to index and better understand our bee species here in Kentucky.
Medicinal Plants of Kentucky
This project serves as a comprehensive resource for identifying, utilizing, and understanding the diverse array of plants native to Kentucky that possess potential medicinal properties. This project is designed for botanists, herbalists, foragers, healthcare professionals, and nature enthusiasts who seek to explore the rich tradition and scientific foundations of plant-based medicine within the state’s unique ecosystems. Kentucky’s varied landscape, from the Appalachian Mountains to its fertile river valleys, harbors an extensive variety of plants with significant medicinal value. Each entry in this project is intended to provide detailed botanical descriptions, photographs for accurate identification, historical uses in traditional medicine, as well as contemporary research findings on the pharmacological properties benefits of these species.
Extirpated Life of Kentucky
Help to rediscover and restore the extirpated species that once called Kentucky home. These creatures formerly resided in Kentucky as part of their native range - but are no longer endemic nor breeding within the Commonwealth, with the exception of bison and elk which were successfully reintroduced and (in the case of elk) are once again free range in the region.
Kentucky's Invasive (Exotic/Nuisance/Noxious) Species
We are tracking and documenting invasive species across Kentucky, encompassing all biological kingdoms. This project focuses on the identification, monitoring, and management of invasive species, with a particular interest in tracking invasive annelids and galls. By highlighting the threats these species pose to native biodiversity, this guide aims to support informed decision-making and conservation efforts throughout the state. Invasive species, also known as noxious weeds, exotic or introduced species, and nuisance species, can significantly disrupt local ecosystems. Kentucky has both Aquatic Nuisance and Terrestrial Nuisance Species Plans, as well as additional guidance in the State Wildlife Plan, to address these challenges. The Exotic Pest Plant Council provides rankings of invasives within Kentucky based on their threats to native species diversity, offering a critical framework for this project's initiatives. Key Features Comprehensive Species Profiles: Detailed descriptions...
Fungi, Algae, & Lichens of Kentucky
This project is an expanded and comprehensive study focused on Kentucky’s diverse array of fungi, algae, and lichens. I aim to facilitate the identification, documentation, and study of these essential organisms, with a special emphasis on tracking native mosses in urban zones. This project extends beyond fungi, algae, and lichens to include rusts, mildews, mosses, molds, and cyanobacteria. Separate efforts are in place to monitor other microbiota species, ensuring a holistic approach to the study of Kentucky's microscopic biodiversity. Key Features Comprehensive Species Coverage: Detailed profiles of fungi, algae, lichens, rusts, mildews, mosses, molds, and cyanobacteria, ensuring a broad and inclusive catalog of species found across Kentucky. Urban Moss Tracking: Special emphasis on identifying and documenting native moss species in urban environments, providing insights into their distribution, ecological roles, and conservation needs. Photographic Documentation: High-resolution ...
